Sextant Support
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Sextant do?
Sextant is a sailing companion: live wind, tides, and tidal currents, a wind-routing engine, and a boat logbook with engine hours — plus a man-overboard button, an Apple Watch app, and home-screen widgets.
Where does the weather and tide data come from?
Wind, tide, and tidal-current forecasts are provided by Open-Meteo. Only coordinates are sent to fetch them — never your identity.
Why does the app need my location?
Your location is used to show conditions where you are, to tag logbook entries, and to keep tracking a man-overboard position in the background. Background location is what powers the man-overboard feature, which is why the App may request “Always” access.
Do I need an account?
No. The App works fully offline with no account. Sign in with Apple is optional and only syncs your logbook across your devices.
How does wind routing work?
Pick a destination and Sextant computes fast sailing routes from the live forecast using an isochrone router and a boat polar diagram — a model of how fast your boat sails at each wind angle. Routing is guidance for planning, not a substitute for proper navigation and judgment.
What do I get with Premium?
Premium is a one-time purchase, with a 14-day free trial, that unlocks detailed marine weather, tides and tidal currents, wind routing, and weather-window alerts. The logbook and man-overboard button are free.
How do I restore a previous purchase?
Settings › Restore Purchases restores Premium on any device signed in to the same Apple Account.
How do I delete my account?
If you signed in, Settings › Delete Account permanently removes your account and all synced log data from every device.
